re: freedom and belonging...I still think I may get a tattoo on each wrist, 'roam' on the right and 'home' on the left. I learned a few years ago that the root word for freedom is the same as the root word for friend, a very old indo-european word meaning 'beloved.' This is because when you were freed from slavery, you were able to form commitments and bonds, to enter into loves and friendships, by choice (instead of being bound to the relationships of your master's house). I love this origin story because it brings those two words together. Here's to choosing our commitments! Glad you survived the hemlock...
